Parsa teenagers start talking openly about sex

Birgunj, June 20: Unlike a few years back, topics like 'sex' and 'reproduction' are no longer a taboo among the teenagers here these days.

The adolescent boys and girls used to feel embarrassed to discuss these topics in the past. But these days, they are discussing matters of sex and reproduction openly.

It is found that youth participation is increasing in programmes related to population, sex education, reproductive health and family planning over the years after the District Public Health Office and the Nepal Family Health Programme started conducting programmes targeted to youths and adolescents.

The teenagers are gradually coming to terms with matters related to sex and reproduction, thanks largely to such programmes targeted to them. They not only talk openly with their peers regarding the bodily changes that take place with the advancing age and the problems concerning sex and reproductive health, but have also started seeking advice from parents.

We come across many problems related to reproductive health of women due to the lack of proper knowledge about sex and reproductive health, shares Rita Lamichhane, an official at the Nepal Family Health Programme.

In view of this, the Nepal Family Health Programme has been conducting the second phase of its programme  in coordination with the District Public Health Office, Parsa since 2008 with the objective of providing sex education to the youths. RSS
